PREPARING FOR A PL SHEEPDOG PUP AND FINDING A GOOD BREEDER
Buying a PON puppy is one of the most important decisions you can make. It is a lifetime commitment of often 12-15 years or more and should not be taken lightly. A Polish Lowland Sheepdog puppy, if properly trained and socialized, will become an amazing, loving, unique family member. When asked what a PON is like, owners often answer “You have to own one to understand...there are no words to explain.” Below are some helpful guidelines.
1. Ask yourself honestly. Do you have the time and energy to train and socialize a young pup?2. Do your homework. Learn about the breed by reading and talking to many breeders.3. Learn what testing should be done and check to see if it is done... Eye Certification, hip testing and see if the parents have a CHIC number...go to OFA to learn more. Also check the PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) status with the breeder.4. Write down the information for each breeder. We suggest you use the “My Breeder Record.” You can click on the link below and print.5. Line up a good vet.6. Find an obedience trainer or club whose methods are fair, firm, consistent and positive.7. Puppy proof your home and yard.8. Learn what equipment, toys, and exercise are appropriate for a puppy. 9. Learn all you can about buying and training a puppy.10. Decide if you want a breeder who will stay in touch with you? A breeder who is willing to answer your questions now and in the future.
TRUST YOUR INTUITION! IF SOMETHING DOESN’T SEEM RIGHT, IT PROBABLY IS NOT.
